I've worked with many talented vendors in my career. This page pays tribute to some of them, and to add some search-engine marketing horsepower to their business. I would endorse any of these with a strong reference. I could list dozens here, and if you are one of those, please forgive me. I will try to rotate the list (this panel only has five spots) periodically.

  • Kapke
  • Murphy
  • Mumford
  • Peterson
  • Johnston
  • Fleming

Tod Kapke

I started working with Tod Kapke in about 2000, when I was the art director of ColoradoBiz magazine. He made an appointment to show me his portfolio. What impressed me the most about his work was his ability to push the edge, think outside of the box. And he demonstrated remarkable ambition and innovation, being mostly self-trained. His background is in photography, but he has an amazing abiliy to fabricate a scene with a combination of built sets and props and digital composition.

See more of his work at www.tkopix.com.

Greg Murphy

Greg Murphy was another of those who came to me when I worked at ColoradoBiz in Denver.

I remember that during the first interview, he was really excited by my desire to break out of the status-quo of small-circulation business magazine photography, and get really creative.

Thus started a journey of collaborative teamwork. Though we have not always agreed on everything, and have had frequent episodes of friction on the road, we’ve created what I consider to be some amazing work.

Our collaboration usually results in photographs which are very theatrical in nature. We focus on the important points of body language, composition, and color harmony.

Greg has taken a short break from professional photography, but I expect him to come back into the scene any time. I would share his website here, but he has never had one. I expect that situation to resolve itself soon.

Phil Mumford

Phil Mumford also is one of those photographers who set an appointment to show his portfolio to me while I was art director at Wiesner Publishing in Denver, Colo.

There are many qualities I look for in hiring a photographer. The most important is, obviously, artistic merit. But other factors have a lot to do with my choice in continuing to give them the best assignments. Reliability, flexibility, good manners, positive attitude are all valuable qualities. Phil Mumford has all of these. I feel that my budget is well-spent with this photographer.

He had a successful studio in Durban, South Africa for many years before moving to the US. See more of his work at his website: www.philmumfordphotography.com

Bryan Peterson

Bryan Peterson is a highly-skilled illustrator who makes his home in Durango, Colorado. I met him also through ColoradoBiz magazine at Wiesner Publishing in Denver. I've given him numerous assignments over the years and have always been impressed. It seems his habit is exceeding expectations.

I had him create a series of maps for LORE Magazine, which published two features every issue which required some geographic orientation. However, I felt that geographically-correct maps were boring, so I found that Bryan Peterson was ideal for placing a location on a map while bringing out some of the culture of the area in drawings.

John Johnston

John Johnston also is a talented photographer who made an appointment to show me his portfolio when I was art director at ColoradoBiz. Through the years he has demonstrated an uncanny ability to think outside the box and bring out genuine character in a subject.

In addition to the tremendous skill, John's customer service skills are the best, as he takes on the assignment with enthusiasm and a positive attitude, and is always in problem-solving mode, even when confronting challenges. I've noticed that he puts effort into complimenting the subjects of his photoshoots to help them feel more comfortable, and to make a connection with them.

He is also a talented fine artist, though I avoid being the judge about who is the greatest, as his wife Lisa Wharton-Johnston has made a name for herself.

Graham Fleming

I've known Graham since 1992, when we were both students in art school.

His work and the depths of his imagination have always enchanted me.

Now, years later, his work continues to amaze me, and we have many opportunities to collaborate, not only in print media.

Graham's illustration is diverse and whimsical. There is always a bit of magic and wonder in the creations, and a hint that you are peeking through a magical keyhole.

Graham currently makes his home in Ome, a Tokyo suburb, with his wife and three young boys. He continually pursues with creative passion disciplines as diverse as animation, dance, music, fine art and filmmaking.
