Todd Kapke, who I always credit as Tod Kapke in the work I publish, is a photo-illustrator from Denver. He introduced himself to me when I was art director of ColoradoBiz magazine. It was good timing, because I needed a good photo-illustrator on my rolodex at the time. Since then I’ve thrown him dozens of projects, all of which have impressive results. 

I’ve probably given him more assignments in the past 12 months than in the previous seven years, but I’ve gotten excellent work from these assignments as well. 

He’s got some really good techniques and methods. He puts a lot of time into concepting and exploring a topic before committing to creating photographs to assemble. And he often builds sets, going to great lengths to assemble the necessary components to achieve a truly theatrical effect.

 

 

The entire process is very entertaining, as he dreams up really fun and exciting concepts, and then finesses the finished product to vivid reality. Some of his work has a more fine-art and stylized feel, in a departure from photo-realism. These works also are excellent.
